And, in three more words...

Describe the branch of extremism diametrically opposed to your own...

Yours truly: Primitivist Centralism-Collectivism. Basically, I have recurring nightmares where John Zerzan, Ted Kaczinski, and the Amish (despite the undeniable quality of their pies) force me to gather roots and berries while I slowly waste away from malnutrition and easily treatable diseases.

hmmm most diametrically opposed to me?

    Theocratic Primativist Idealists

Hmmm seems our enemies are similar. Actually its ironic that when i think about those with the most fundamentally opposed veiwpoints I don't experiance as much hostility as I would towards a group that shares some points of veiw in common but opposes me on others. For instance the Amish do not bother me as much as Theocratic Industrialized Pragmatists like our Republicans even if I share the Industrialization and Pragmatism with them. Perhaps I fear the idea of a theocracy using pragmatism and mass production techniques to full effect, whereas the Idealism and Primativism almost ensures any would be theocratic ruler wouldn't be effective or liked.

Anyone else notice that the veiw most diametrically opposed to themselves is not as offensive to them as views sharing some things in common?

Provided they don't become violent or too numerous (which, without penicillin or sterilized medical instruments, I don't foresee happening), primitivist folk can swing from vines and form drum circles to their hearts' content.

Historically, however, movements with common ancestors do seem to be the most violently opposed to one another, don't they? Consider the bitter rivalry between the Trotskyists and the Stalinists, or the bloody clashes between the Italian fascists and the Italian socialists.

Wow, you know come to think of it there is a lot of truth to what you are saying.

I think for there to be conflict between two groups, as some pointed out the values of Bush Jr, and Saddam Hussein... both rich from oil and both despotic are really not the issue. Rather it is probably because their values were too much alike.

Same might hold true for the Moral Majority, and Al Quaida. Both would probably stone Howard Stern if they could, institute more or less the same religious laws. Both hate homosexuals, when Al Quaida attacked America for what he perceived it's sins, some moral Majority televangelists like Falwell and Robertson did indeed say God allowed the attack due to our tolerance of homosexuality and other moral decadence. Yet given the chance, Al Quaida and those beleiving in the moral majority would fight a holy war against each other with gusto if they could.
